Hosanna on Palm Sunday

I join the crowd singing hosannas
“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord”
a Psalm of Ascents
a hymn of longing as we come to temple
a song of insurgency
coded revolution
laying our hopes in the dreamed of king
palms and cloaks placed before him
this miracle worker riding down the hill
drowning him in expectation
that he is our kind of King.
Jesus rides a donkey into the holy city
his rag tag army of disciples follow,
confused,
hopeful,
anxious
the end is near.
He sings his own song
of crucifixion
and life in death
leaving behind our palms and dreams.
I join the crowd singing hosannas.
