The Gift of the Oceans

Last week we explored how the Season of Creation is dedicated to God as Creator and Sustainer of all life, and unites the global Christian family in praying for and engaging in a variety of actions joining God’s caring work for creation.
This week we reflect on the wonder and vastness of the oceans. They cover 70% of the surface of the planet and are where myriads of species live, many of which we know nothing about. All life, in the sea and land, including ours, depends on their health.
Our readings from Psalm 104 and Job 38 invite us to stand in awe of God, Creator and Sustainer of all that is; whose image is seen in these oceans. As we marvel at the complexity of life within the oceans and their importance for all life on earth, we marvel at God who created this intricate self-sustaining web of life in which we are gently held. What images or names for God emerge as you stand toe deep in our oceans?
This season also reminds us that our actions over the last 100 or so years have damaged the oceans and compromised that web. We have much to repent. I wonder how we might nurture both the oceans and this web of life as an act of devotion to God, Source of all Being; as an expression of our being image bearers of God’s creating and life giving self; and for our survival?
